Google, Facebook and 19 other social networking sites faced legal action for offences of promoting enmity between classes after the Government granted sanction to prosecute them.
The Government today told a Delhi court there is sufficient material to proceed against the 21 social networking sites which included Yahoo and Microsoft for offences of promoting enmity between classes and causing prejudice to national integration.
“The sanctioning authority has personally gone through the entire records and materials produced before him and after considering and examining the same, he is satisfied that there is sufficient material to proceed against the accused persons under section 153-A, 153-B and 295-A of the IPC,” the Centre said in its report placed before Metropolitan Magistrate Sudesh Kumar.
The two-page report was placed after the court directed Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to get the summons served on over ten foreign-based companies. The summons were issued on December 23 last but they remained unserved.
The court had on December 23 issued summons to 21 social netorking websites for allegedly committing offences of criminal conspiracy, sale of obscene books and sale of obscene objects to young persons.
It had said prima facie the accused companies were liable to be summoned for promoting enmity between classes, causing prejudice to national integration and insulting religion or religious belief of any class, but the summons could not be executed without having prior sanction of central or state govrnment or the district magistrate.
The Department of Information Technology, in its report, granted saction to proceed against the 21 companies for allegedly promoting enmity between classes and causing prejudice to national integration.
The report said, “The documents and contents therein are in the nature to instigate enimity between different groups on the ground of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language and doing acts prejudicial to the maintainance of harmony….”
It said the contents were provocative and were prejudicial to national integration.
The report said in view of the documents and confirmation of availability of such contents on the website/ search engines as reported by Station House Officer of Tughlak Road police station, the sanctioning authority, Government of India, was satisfied that such content was violative of the provisions of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines) Rules 2011.
It said after due application of “judicious mind”, it was found appropriate to grant sanction under section 196 of CrPC to proceed against the accused persons in the aforesaid complaint keeping in view national harmony, integration and national interest.
The report said that they had held four meetings with the representatives of social networking sites and search engines Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft.
“The availability of objectionable content on their websites and their search results through the search engine was brought to their knowledge. The objectionable and defamatory content was also shown to them and they were requested to take appropriate action in the public interest, national harmony and integration

A new video game has gotten its hooks into Brian Kealer, a 26-year-old San Francisco software engineer. He’s not killing birds or using his vocabulary to impress his friends. No, Kealer is after real prizes, like the iPad2 he just scored. And he’s playing with his bank account.
At least once every day, Kealer signs into SaveUp.com, a new financial website, and does some financial activity that wins him credits he can then use to play for big money prizes. To earn those credits, he can pay a credit card bill, deposit money into his savings account, or watch a sponsored video about personal finance.
To be clear, Kealer’s not making any real dollar bets; he’s just paying his bills. But by participating in SaveUp, he is playing into the financial services industry’s latest attempts to attract and keep engaged consumers. Call it, inelegantly, “gamification.” It involves the use of game-like attributes and mechanics — contests, prizes, scorecards, badges, friendly competitions and the like — to make the boring business of money more appealing to hard-to-snag consumers.
“It’s a word that everybody hates, but it is descriptive of what’s going on,” says Jim Bruene of Netbanker, a banking technology consulting firm.
Financial firms are turning to games to attract a younger demographic that may be impervious to advertising. Online games afford banks a cheaper way to attract customers in an era when interest rates on savings are practically nil, debit card fees are capped and banks have small margins and little leeway to throw rewards at consumers. “It doesn’t cost much” for bankers to market this way, he says. And the ability to push games out in smart phone and tablet applications probably contributes to the interest, too.

But financial games may have a more serious social purpose too: Some policymakers believe that bank-run lotteries can encourage lower income people to save more money.
Of course, it’s not just banks that are “gamifying.” Zynga, the company that creates social-network games like Farmville and Mafia Wars, raised $1 billion in its recent public offering on the expectation that its commercial tie-ins with companies like Pizza Hut and Paramount Pictures would pull real cash from the 200-million monthly active users the company claims. Web network marketing companies like Groupon and FourSquare offer participants badges, crowns and other awards.
Gamification is a $100 million market that should grow to $2.8 billion by 2016, according to M2 Research, an Encinitas, California, analysis firm, that is assessing the trend across the board. Another consulting firm, Gartner Inc, says it expects that by 2014 “more than 70 percent of Global 2000 organizations will have at least one gamified application.”
But because game attributes are hard to define these numbers can be dicey; it’s a little bit difficult to isolate what counts as gamification and where the profits come from. So loud is the buzz that Gartner recently placed gamification on its “hype cycle” — a list of technology trends — at a place where it is approaching the “peak of inflated expectations.”
Banks have been a little bit slower to come to the game table than other companies, perhaps worried that using frivolous games to market serious financial products would be perceived negatively.
But in 2011, CapitalOne did a promotion inside a couple of Zynga games, and credit card companies have been running sweepstake-like promotions for years. Since the early 2000s, for example, Visa has been running contests in which cardholders would be entered into lotteries every time they used their cards, for prizes like 100 times their purchase amount or a year’s worth of bills.
Currently, Chase is gamifying its bank account promotions; in the third quarter of 2011 it ran a $6 million sweepstakes for customers who paid a Chase bill (like a mortgage or credit card) with a Chase checking account.
The new players are a little bit different. SaveUp, a San Francisco startup, isn’t a bank; it’s an intermediary that hopes to attract banks as marketing clients, but consumers can play regardless of what bank they use. Behind the games, SaveUp is an aggregator that claims to use the same technology as Mint.com to bring in user accounts from hundreds of financial institutions.
Another new intermediary firm, Bobber Interactive, has created “GoalCard” – a Facebook-linked debit card that lets users play games with friends to win rewards points that they can trade for cash prizes. Some of the games are financial literacy quizzes, and players who do well enough on them can graduate to a level that allows them to play “Credits and Debits,” a game that is bejeweled with dollar signs and piggy banks, instead of emeralds and diamonds.
All of the financial games get really serious when they have a higher policy purpose. A paper published a year ago by the National Bureau of Economic Research suggested that savings accounts with a lottery component could encourage low-income families to save more money. These prize-linked accounts, which offer savers a chance to win a specified (and potentially large) amount of money, are already offered in various countries, including many in Latin America and Europe. In Great Britain, the government issues Premium Bonds that pay off in lottery chances instead of interest.
“This is a well-tested product. (and its ). appeal is fairly widespread,” the study’s authors, led by Melissa Schettini Kearney of the University of Maryland, concluded.
Prize-linked savings accounts were piloted in the U.S., starting in 2009, by a group of Michigan credit unions, and now some in Nebraska have launched a new “Save to Win” program at the beginning of this year. Depositors who put at least $25 in a share certificate at a participating credit union will be entered into a drawing. Every $25 (up to $250 a month) is another entry. Monthly prizes range from $125 to $1,000; there will be one $25,000 grand prize at the end of the year.
In the last two years, six states (Rhode Island, Nebraska, Washington, Maryland, Maine and North Carolina) have changed their state laws to allow savings promotional raffles.
“No one can deny that people love lotteries,” Peter Orszag, President Obama’s first budget director, wrote in a Financial Times op ed last year. “Let’s give savings accounts linked to lotteries a chance. It’s a gamble but it could well pay off handsomely.”
SaveUp, the site that Kealer frequents, isn’t messing around. Its top prize is a $2-million annuity; it also has airline tickets, cars, scholarships and a $5,000 Apple gift card in the mix. Many of its prizes are furnished through sponsorships; and they are all bonded and insured, according to CEO Priya Haji, who founded the start-up with Sammy Shreibati, an engineer who has worked on education products.
To win awards, customers sign up for the site, and link it to their bank and credit card accounts. Every time they save $10, they are entered with a chance to win. They get three chances to play every time they watch a sponsored educational videos. Titles include “Harnessing the Power of Mutual Funds,” for example.
Haji sees gamification as a way to engage financial customers who might not be tempted by net worth reports, even if they are in colorful pie chart form. She says her site capitalizes on the top three trends in the banking sector: (1) consumers being more concerned about reducing debt; (2) the industry moving beyond conventional financial management to behavioral approaches of modifying financial behavior, and (3) social networking.
Progress mechanics, like a thermometer that shows you how much you’ve saved for a goal; socializing mechanics (how much you spend at Starbucks compared to your friends, or even compared to other people at your salary level); leaderboards and badges “are all elements of games that make you feel like you are achieving something,” says Gabriel Zichermann, a gaming expert and editor at Gamification.co.
But not everyone is a believer. “If that works to get some people to have good behavior, I’m all for that,” said Mark Schwanhausser, a senior analyst with Javelin Strategy & Research, a Pleasanton, California, consulting company that monitors financial services trends. “But it’s like mixing a game into something that is pretty darn serious, and I don’t think it’s going to be a widespread winner with banks.”
Gartner analyst Stessa Cohen doesn’t think banks can afford to ignore this trend. Basic bank services are becoming commoditized, and intermediaries like SaveUp and Bobber could easily induce gamers to switch financial services companies. That’s because consumers banking through intermediary firms could easily switch banks if another deal came along. “That’s a big problem for banks,” she said. “They may think ‘we don’t have to pay attention to that,’ but then all of the sudden, 10 percent of their customers are just using them as a storage facility.”
And it’s not clear that the financial gamesmanship will win over those coveted Gen Y customers, either, despite the blatant pitch. “GoalCard is integrated completely into the Facebook ecosystem, which our Gen Y user Nathan uses as his primary filter for relevance and validation around all aspects of his life,” Bobber Interactive’s CEO Eric Eastman says of the model Gen Y customer he uses in his presentations.
That sounds like a challenge to a pretty cynical generation. “They don’t believe anything a brand says,” says Zichermann. “‘Oh, really? That’s the fastest car? And the tastiest burger?’”
It’s a short step from that attitude to the one expressed by one 20-something who Reuters recently introduced to SaveUp for this story: “I don’t want my personal finance tied up with marketing ploys,” he said.
Said another: “That sounds like a site that is probably just selling your info, which is scary.” SaveUp claims bank-level security and “does not sell any information to third parties,” according to Shreibati, the company’s chief technology officer.
But a free iPad is a free iPad. Kealer, a Gen Y-er who says his job involves discovering new mobile apps, has cast his cynicism aside after winning the coveted tablet and a $100 Macy’s gift card.

The computer has come a long way since the mid 70′s, from being a scientist’s toy to now becoming a critical productivity tool for businesses, and a full fledged infotainment device for public in general. Personal computers have enveloped every sphere of modern day activity with their sheer magnitude of multiple applications. However, the transitional phase in the computing industry was wrought with numerous technological innovations. PCs have transformed into a mainstream force, which has changed the way people conduct business. PCs, inclusive of notebook PCs, personal digital assistants, desktop PCs, tablet PCs, are now common tools of business and personal life.
Laptop and Notebook computers are the primary source of revenues for the world PC industry. Globally, notebook personal computers are increasingly outpacing desktop PCs in terms of features, computing power and price. Laptops consume up to 90 percent less energy in comparison to desktops PCs. With rising energy cost and the shrinking price difference between a desktop and laptop over the entire product lifecycle makes laptop a cost-effective solution than a desktop from a TCO (total cost of ownership) perspective. The growth of worldwide notebook computer shipments is being further fuelled by the increasing popularity of consumer models that are designed to cater to the need to be mobile and for personal customization.
Netbooks or ‘mini notebooks’ are changing the way people think about the mobile broadband and Internet by enabling consumers to access photos, video, music, and much more, on-the-go. By combining the affordability of netbooks with cost-effective mobile broadband solutions, developers are bringing connectivity to the masses. As a result, netbook PCs will outpace sales of traditional notebook computers in volume terms. Gradually narrowing distinction between netbook PCs and notebook PCs, and cheaper price mean netbooks offer much greater variety and appeal to multiple demographics. Also, subsidies offered by telecommunication firms for signing mobile broadband contracts play a vital role in its uptake.
As consumers continue to embrace digital lifestyle, companies will create products that reflect the sophistication and mobility that is now a priority for enterprise and non-enterprise users alike. Portable computer systems will continue to shine in coming years as consumers continue to seek consumer electronic products they can use anywhere, anytime. An extreme example of this trend is introduction of Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPC) that delivers comprehensive PC capability in ultra-light and small-form factors for on-the-move business users. Also, Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) are expected to surface as a result of increased usage of Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC). MIDs enable users to have data and high-quality voice capabilities for both professional and personal use resulting in rich Internet experience.

Apple Inc. halted the release of its iPhone 4S at retail stores in Beijing and Shanghai on Friday after a riot almost started outside one of its stores in the Chinese capital.
An angry mob of people who had waited overnight pelted the store with eggs and assaulted a mall manager after employees refused to open as scheduled.
Carolyn Wu, an Apple spokeswoman in Beijing, said the company’s five authorized stores in China had sold out of the iPhone 4S and that the Beijing store was prevented from opening because of the large crowd.
“To ensure the safety of our customers and employees, [the] iPhone will not be available in our retail stores in Beijing and Shanghai for the time being,” Wu said.
The phone is still available online through its service provider, China Unicom, which is offering the device for free provided users commit to multi-year contracts. But the crowds that lined up at Apple stores were not interested in cellphone plans, and were willing to pay $790 to $1,070 for the device alone.
People started converging Thursday outside the Apple store in one of Beijing’s most popular high-end malls. Some brought sleeping bags. Tension grew overnight and through the early morning as prospective buyers sought positions near the front door. Fights broke out between bands of migrant workers who had been hired by scalpers to purchase the phones for later sale on the gray market.
“Ninety percent of the people here are scalpers,” said a man surnamed Jin, who said friends recruited him to stand in line.
The incident underscores the popularity of the Apple brand in China, which has one of the world’s fastest-growing markets for mobile phones and personal computers.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company said in October that sales in China rose to $13 billion, from $3 billion, for the fiscal year ending Sept. 24. Plans are afoot to make the iPhone’s digital assistant, Siri, fluent in Chinese.
Apple’s five official stores in China — three in Shanghai and two in Beijing — generate more revenue on average than any other Apple stores in the world, the company said last year.
Many upwardly mobile urbanites wouldn’t be caught dead without an iPhone. In June, a 17-year-old high school student reportedly sold a kidney to buy an iPad 2. And in September, a 16-year-old girl was killed in a fight with her mother over the right to buy an Apple computer.
The scene Friday was not the first time an Apple release had caused a public disturbance. The same Beijing store had its glass door shattered in May after a scuffle between a scalper and an employee during the launch of the iPad 2 and white iPhone 4.
Bill Bishop, a Beijing-based technology consultant, said the mobs were a result of Apple delaying products and limiting supplies to create a frenzy of demand.
“It’s a conscious marketing strategy by Apple, and it’s going to cause a problem because things are ridiculously out of control,” he said. “Nobody can be happy with Apple today in Beijing.”
Because the stores limit customers’ purchases, scalpers organize large groups to swarm product releases, hoping to resell the products at a cut above retail.
Buyers were reportedly recruited to line up at the Shanghai store Friday as well, with promises of a free breakfast and $15.
Even when a major release is not impending, flocks of men hawking iPhones and iPads have become a regular sight outside China’s authorized Apple retailers. Scalpers made up much of the crowd Friday in Beijing. The eclectic group included seniors from the countryside seeking their fortunes as well as high-school dropouts looking to make some quick cash. Some said that they had organized on Internet forums designed for temporary-job seekers.
One member of the crowd, a film extra from Beijing, said he was offered about $20 to wait overnight for the phone. He said scalpers picked up hundreds like him in buses outside film studios where extras commonly work.
“After Apple said they were not selling the iPhones today, no organizers paid their temporary workers,” said the man, who declined to give his name.
One man wearing a puffy red jacket said he had organized 500 buyers to wait overnight for the release. That was more than a rival group, he said.
“They have a lot of people, but we have more,” said the man, who also declined to give his name. “They will be overwhelmed.”
Just before the store was set to open, a guard announced through a megaphone that the coveted phone would not be sold. A brief moment of disbelieving silence was then broken by loud expletives and shouts of “Apple lied to us!” and “Open the door!”
Soon afterward, a man arrived with a bag of eggs, which he began handing out to the crowd. A space cleared, and moments later, gooey yolk dripped down the store’s glass facade.
When the mall’s property manager tried to intervene, a gang of men chased after him.
“I’m not an Apple employee, I’m a mall manager!” he shouted while trying to block punches and kicks.
By 9 a.m., police had managed to disperse the crowd and clear the square. Police could not be reached for comment.
A 60-year-old woman who gave only her surname, Chen, said the melee ruined her plans to give her son the latest iPhone for his birthday.

Get ready for more Google+ data in your Google searches as the company aims to personalize your results by including more Google+ profiles, business pages, posts, and Google+ and Picasa Photos. The search giant recently announced the significant change to its search engine, calling it Search plus Your World. The new feature is baked right into Google and aims to personalize your search results by including Google+ data when you are signed into your Google account.
Search plus Your World surfaces content that has been shared with you on Google+, as well as public information from the social networking site that is related to your search, and integrates this data into typical Web search results. The new opt-out feature is currently rolling out over the next few days to all users searching Google in English.
Search plus Your World triumvirate
UsersThere are three types of Google+ data that will start showing up in the new Search plus Your World results: personal results, profiles in search, and profiles and pages. Personal results include data from your own Google+ photos and posts, as well as Google+ data that has been shared with you. These results may include non-public Google+ photos and posts that were shared with you or posts you shared with a select group of people. Say, for example, you do a search for Tahiti in anticipation of a vacation you’re taking on the French Polynesian island. Photos of Tahiti posted by anyone in your Google+ circles could appear in your results.
Since some of this data may not be publicly available, only you will be able to see these posts in your search results. Your private Google+ photos and posts will not start showing up in a stranger’s search results, Google said in a blog post announcing the change.
Profiles in search will be just what it sounds like: more Google+ profiles appearing in your search results. Google+ profiles have been appearing in search for some time, and Google has been featuring links to Google+ profiles of journalists, authors and other writers in its results for some time. But now if you type in the name of someone you’re connected to on Google+, such as your friend Sam Clarke, his name will start appearing as an autocomplete suggestion as you type. The new profile results will also include Google+ profiles of famous people such as authors, musicians, and actors.
[Click to enlarge] Google’s Search Plus Your World: What it Means for UsersPeople and pages results are simply results from Google+ business pages and notable Google+ users. Say, for example, you search for a generic topic in Google such as “music.” You may then see results in the right-hand column of the search results page with links to people on Google+. In the “music” search, for example, Google says you might see links to the Google+ profiles of people such as Britney Spears, Alicia Keys and Snoop Dogg.
Twitter freaks out; will Washington be far behind?
Google’s new search feature is raising some concerns about Google prioritizing its own content instead of linking out to third-party sites, which arguably is the whole point of a search engine. Twitter, for example, is raising concerns that it will be harder to use Google to find timely Twitter posts about breaking news such as tweets from protesters in countries like Egypt and Syria.
The problem with Twitter’s argument, however, is that the micro-blog chose not to renew its search results agreement with Google in July, according to Google. As a result, a lot of Twitter data is now effectively walled off from Google.
Facebook has not commented on Search plus Your World, but content on the world’s largest social network is also something Google is not allowed to index. But considering Facebook’s recent privacy deal with the FTC, it would end up in real trouble if the company let Google index Facebook data that users believed was going to remain private.
Regardless, if other social networks won’t let Google access their data, why shouldn’t the search giant personalize your Google search results with your own information from Google+?
Google’s Search Plus Your World: What it Means for UsersPerhaps a bigger issue than any potential sniping from other social networks is that, as bloggers such as MG Siegler and Search Engine Land’s Danny Sullivan have mentioned, Google may get into antitrust trouble over Search plus Your World. Google is effectively using its popularity as a search engine provider to promote its social network by prioritizing Google+ data. Bundling one smaller service on the back of another much bigger one is what sparked Microsoft’s trouble with antitrust regulators through the late 1990s and early 2000s when it included Internet Explorer with Windows.
With all the current antitrust interest in Google from lawmakers and regulators, deliberately prioritizing links to Google+ in search results may not be the best idea.
If you hate the idea of having Google+ data messing up your search results you can turn it off by adjusting your search settings once the new feature rolls out to your account.

Apple is not taking part in the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas but is present at the trade show through rip-offs of its products. From MacBook Air-inspired ultrabooks, to iPad-like tablets, smart TVs, and cloud computing technology, you will find clones of Apple’s product lineup at CES 2012 – and this is just a taste of what’s coming up at the show this week.
Ultrabooks, thin and light laptops, are expected to be the big thing this year, and unsurprisingly most of them look more or less like a MacBook Air, except they run Windows. Manufacturers are trying price their ultrabooks below the MacBook Air, with Samsung’s $900 Series 5 ultrabooks as an example. Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptop line for 2012 is not far off from the now-classic MacBook Pro design, either, and its ultrabook IdeaPad 300 is just as similar to the MacBook Air. Oh, and Acer and LG are on the ultrabook bandwagon, too, joining other vendors that are expected to introduce as many as 50 ultrabook models at CES 2012.
Tablet Wars
Android tablets didn’t manage to overthrow the iPad from the top seller spot in 2011 — in fact, they barely managed to nudge it. So this leaves plenty of space for tablet manufacturers such as Toshiba, Acer, and Samsung to have a go again at tablet designs, making them as thin as possible and hoping Android 4.0 will fill the software gap to give them an edge over the iPad.
Meanwhile, Vizio is not shy admitting that it wants to emulate Apple’s computer line with new laptops and all-in-one desktops at Dell prices.
Competi
Some manufacturers are so eager to push ahead of Apple that they even prepared products based apparently on nothing more than rampant speculation about the unreleased and unannounced Apple TV set.
Lenovo’s smart TV runs Android 4.0 for apps and includes voice control and console-quality gaming capabilities, as well as flicker-free 3D capability. Lenovo’s smart TV debut will join other Google Android-enabled TV sets from Samsung, LG, Sony, and Vizio, hoping to they beat Apple to its TV strategy.
Apple’s iCloud cloud computing technology was also inspiration for some of the companies exhibiting at CES 2012, who are trying to integrate software services with their own lineup of hardware.
Acer’s free cloud service, dubbed AcerCloud, will allow people to upload all their images, video, and documents to Acer’s servers and access them over the Web from any PC, mobile phone, or tablet running Windows or Android. In fact, Acer ripped off Apple’s iCloud and even used its slide wholesale (aside from the font) as The Verge points out.
The More, The Merrier?
Don’t get me wrong, it’s great that these manufacturers get “inspired” by Apple and give consumers access to similar technologies, usually for considerably lower prices.
But as often occurs with CES announcements, probably more than half of these Apple rip-offs will never end up in consumers’ hands. The project may be spiked by the vendor, or the product ships too late to matter anymore. Just because they resemble an Apple product doesn’t mean they are of the same quality; and consumers are increasingly aware of this, as shown by the continued dominance of the iPad and iPod in their market segments.

When I was working on the UK’s best known computer magazine I wanted to be a motoring journalist. Those around me all had similar affectations. They wanted to write about music, travel, food, arts. We might have enjoyed what we did but there was always something else we wanted to be.
Companies are the same. They might be great and successful but they always aspire to be someone else. Particularly if they get a taste of that something.
And this is the problem for Blackberry. Here was a company which built the phones its founders wanted to use. Mike Lazaridis described himself as “A Focus Group of One” and they built excellent products. Features were added “Because I want it”. Devices that suited suits. Corporate America beat a path to their door and much of the rest of the world followed. They succeeded in getting secure systems into major companies. Something Nokia had tried at and failed. When the mobile world spelt “security” WTLS and the internet world spelt it SSL, the internet world won. That RIM got something new into the most conservative IT systems in the world is an incredible achievement. It’s so secure I’ve heard tell of spooks, those who trust no-one, using it.
The devices built on this, although I mourn the loss of the jog dial from the very earliest of Blackberries, the UI was super-productive, all the features are still there. Using T to get to the top and B to the bottom, intelligent use of the space bar in email fields to generate
Nothing does email like a Blackberry, it’s quick and efficient. Even when Microsoft tried to do to BES with Exchange Server what it had done to Netscape with Explorer the guys from Canada came out on top and for a very good reason: they had a good product.
Then 14 year old girls found how Totally awesome LOL BlackBerry Messenger was. These were users who not only used text and BBM as the prime means of communication, they didn’t even configure their email.
The timing for this was perfect. Blackberry had long ago won all the corporate and governmental users it was going to reach and the small business market was starting to go the same way. Growth which have been accelerating wasn’t going to do so any more, but come the teens and that was masked by being the new cool device in the playground.
We ended up in the ironic position of senior executives asking for iPhones and their daughters wanting Blackberries, and as much as the executives IT carers and the networks lamented the iPhones limitations on security and signalling they had to give in.
This however isn’t a long lasting position. Executives will drift back to the devices which make them more productive. A keyboard is. Angry Birds is not.
Worse, teens are fickle. Today’s Uggs are tomorrow’s Crocs, and technology falls out of favour every bit as much as impractical footwear.
It’s put Blackberry into the bind it is in today. Instead of building the best possible email device, RIM went after the new users. Pink Pearl anyone? Then trying to fix all the things that made a Blackberry not an iPhone. Buying the company Torch to have a less-crap browser, The Storm and 9800 making a pigs ear of touch.
One thing you may have noticed about Mike Lazaridis is that he is not a 14 year old girl.
The principals of “Because I want it” are not the same as those of “because I’m worth it”, and we ended up with marginalised phones.
Like my writing friends RIM wanted to be something else, to be Apple with tablets, entertainment products and music. It’s not right for the company. The Java-based platform is dreadful for games. Look at Bejewelled on a Blackberry against an iPhone or ‘Droid and the quality of the animation is so poor it affects the gameplay.
Deep down RIM is in an enviable situation. Unlike all the Android manufacturers it has some very special core technology and product differentiation. There is a real reason why you’d by a second one rather than flip-flopping between a Motorola, HTC and Samsung. For RIM there is all that security and the guiding hand of company IT departments and this must be seen as the solution for the current woes.
When I say “this” I mean both RIM’s position of strength and its rivals position of weakness.
First Blackberry must go back to building devices which compromise everything else to do email well. Not compromise email to do other things in a mediocre way. Remember first generation Blackberrys didn’t even do voice. Perhaps they should even go back to black and white and use e-ink. Rather than trying to be an iPhone they should be something an iPhone is not a device with a week’s battery life.
Second they should abandon the teen market before it abandons them, and do it in a smart way. Licence BBM to one, just one, Android manufacturer. Make it expensive, charge them ongoing costs for running the service as well as an up-front royalty.
But who could refuse? Offer it to a company which isn’t a great rival in North America, and I’m thinking Sony (Ericsson) here. For both companies it could be market-moving. All those teens who will abandon their Blackberry anyway and are trying to make The Big iPhone Android Decision will jump away from Apple and yet Blackberry still makes money from it. To an Android phone maker with only brand as a USP it becomes a massively competing reason for the teens to buy their phone over anyone else.

One theme clearly will dominate this year’s International Consumer Electronics Show: catching up with Apple.
Mind you, no companies are putting it that way in their announcements for this week’s Las Vegas gadget fest, but the subtext fairly rings out.
The big news, as any tech blog or analyst will tell you, will be the bevy of manufacturers unveiling so-called “ultrabooks.” What’s an ultrabook? An Intel-based PC that strives to match the MacBook Air’s weight, thinness and power.
Apple, incidentally, released its first Air in January 2008 and achieved the breakthrough design everyone’s now mimicking – with solid state flash storage and improved battery life – in October 2010.
So, put another way, the big news is that PC makers have caught up to Apple, 15 months late – assuming, of course, the devices are any good.
“The bottom line is, Apple is not at CES, yet they cast a very long shadow,” said Tim Bajarin, president of consulting firm Creative Strategies.
Depending on whom you ask, companies will unveil anywhere from 30 to 70 ultrabooks. That seems eerily reminiscent of last year’s event, when companies showcased dozens of slates in a rush to replicate the success of Apple’s iPad.
Nevertheless, we’ll see plenty more this week. And the Apple envy won’t stop there.
Microsoft is expected to drop a few more hints about Windows 8, its forthcoming operating system optimized for tablets and offering multitouch technology. It’ll work sort of like, well, Apple’s iOS, which – not to belabor the point – appeared on the iPad in January 2010.
Many companies will also roll out new smart phones in their quest to chip away at the dominance of Apple’s iPhone. So far reality hasn’t come close to the hype.
Reports are we’ll see some new AT&T smart phones running on its LTE network – offering so-called fourth generation speeds – an LG phone powered by Intel’s new mobile chipset, Medfield, and plenty of new devices running on the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.
Even the various ultra-high resolution and 3-D TVs on display this year will have to compete with Apple in consumers minds, despite that Apple hasn’t introduced a TV. Just the rumblings it will roll out some category game-changer this year or next is likely to hold off many consumers from upgrading the biggest screen in their home.
So does all the CES news still matter, even if the products are behind or inferior to their Apple counterparts? Of course it does. Bringing more options to the market at competitive costs – many will be cheaper than the Apple versions – is always good for consumers.
This year’s CES is on track to be the second biggest ever in terms of physical size, with more than 1.8 million square feet of exhibit space booked as of press time, according to the Consumer Electronics Association, which owns and organizes the event. That’s up about 9 percent from last year’s show.
The popular iLounge, featuring Apple accessories, has swelled from 4,000 square feet when it launched two years ago to 88,000 square feet this year. Apple itself, by the way, hasn’t exhibited at the CES since 1994.

The annual gadget bacchanalia known as CES kicks off next Tuesday in Vegas, but as has been the case for the past decade, the most important new product in consumer electronics won’t be there.
This year’s star no-show, however, wasn’t invented by a certain Cupertino fruit factory, but by the obscure Canadian startup Datawind. It’s called the Aakash Ubislate 7, and its humble specs would cause iPad owners to burst out in hysterical laughter: A 7-inch screen without multitouch. A battery that lasts a little under three hours. A processor that runs at a tenth the speed of iPad 2′s A5 chip and just two gigabytes of storage — all running a four-year-old version of the Android OS and crammed into a chunky case reminiscent of a vintage GPS.
Given its last-gen tech and entry-grade components, you’d probably guess that the disruptive innovation of the Aakash tablet isn’t performance, and you’d be right: The goal of the Aakash isn’t to be great, but to be “good enough” — at the cheapest price possible. In other words, to take Steve Jobs’s words in vain, the way Datawind hopes to put a dent in the universe is by minimizing the dent in users’ wallets.
The Aakash is the product of a competition sponsored by the Indian government in February of this year to develop and manufacture an ultra-cheap tablet optimized for the nation’s 1.2 billion market, targeting a price point below $50. Montreal-based Datawind, founded in 2000 by the brothers Raja and Suneet Singh Tuli, beat out giants like European semiconductor titan STMicroelectronics by coming up with a design that undercut the next highest bidder by nearly 25%. In fact, when the results were announced, CEO Suneet Tuli frantically called his older brother to ask if they’d accidentally miscalculated their costs. CTO Raja assured his sibling that they hadn’t: They’d won the bid. Now all they had to do was deliver.
On December 14, they did just that — putting the Aakash on sale for the absurd price of 2500 rupees, or around $47, hoping to move 100,000 units over the course of 2012. That figure was seen as staggeringly optimistic, since it represented 40 percent of India’s total market for tablet computers. But as soon as the announcement went all, their call center was jammed with calls, and their website started crashing due to excess traffic, to the point where their Internet provider warned them they might be experiencing a malicious hack attack. Their initial inventory of 30,000 units sold out in three days. Within two weeks, they’d built up a backlog of 1.4 million preorders. According to CEO Suneet Tuli, that reservation pool is now over 2 million — and still going strong.
“We’re overwhelmed,” says Tuli. “If you talked to analysts a couple months ago, they’d have told you their forecasts for all tablet sales in India in 2012 was around 250,000 units. We were more optimistic: We thought the market was more like one million, and hoped we could do 10 percent of that. And now it looks like we could exceed that by 15 or 20 times.”
The shocking demand for Datawind’s $50 tablet underscores the fact that access to the Internet is no longer a luxury, but a utility. “For those of us who’ve been online since the early ’90s, being connected to the web is like having running water,” says Tuli. “When the power goes out at home, my kids don’t scream that the electricity’s off, they scream ‘Dad, the Internet’s down!’”
The Tulis had long believed that this was true even of consumers in emerging economies like their native India: The factor barring low-income individuals from the net wasn’t education or even infrastructure — it was, plain and simple, price.
“The media in India was reporting last month this supposedly feel-good story that the country now has 100 million active Internet users,” says Tuli. “But if you read more closely, you realized that they were defining ‘active’ as using the net once a month. If you were counting only people who accessed the Internet at least once every other day, the number drops to 48 million. That’s 4 percent of the Indian population. Four percent! On the other hand, India now has over 900 million mobile phone subscriptions. So 75 percent of Indians have access to some kind of wireless network, and some way of recharging mobile devices.”
That statistic didn’t just convince the brothers that India represented a massive untapped market; it also pointed to the fact that the nation’s path to Net nirvana would go the opposite direction from that of the West, where computing began with bulky, expensive desktops and shrank down in size and price to embrace notebooks, then tablets and smartphones. Internet access in India began with the smallest and cheapest device, the phone, and would grow up and out. Which meant that the key to winning the market wasn’t a device positioned as an inferior laptop alternative, but as a superior substitute for a cellphone.
“We’ve been working on low-cost Internet devices for years,” says Tuli. “And the biggest problem for us wasn’t the technology — it was the price point. We put products out there for $100, $150, and the numbers weren’t fantastic. But at $50, that’s the price of lunch for two at an Indian hotel.”
According to research firm IMRB, the median household income for the 75% of Indians living in urban areas is around $3750, putting a $50 device at about 1.3 percent of annual income. A $499 iPad 2 would cost nearly 2 percent of annual income for a family at the U.S. median household income of $26,364.
“For at least 200 million Indians, the Aakash would not be seen as expensive,” says Tuli. “And that’s an absolutely enormous number for us.”
But price alone wouldn’t be enough to make the Aakash a success. The key to unlocking Indian demand was creating a device that reflected the market’s unique preferences and restrictions — factors with which the Tulis, who were born in India and moved with their family to Canada as adolescents, had native familiarity.
Gurinder Osan/Associated Press
A DataWind representative displays the supercheap ‘Aakash’ Tablet computers during its launch in New Delhi, India, Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011.
The first design decision the Tulis made was to give the Aakash a full-sized USB port. “Most tablets out there have mini- or micro-USB ports, or even proprietary ports like the iPad,” says Tuli. “But the way that Indians carry around and manage data is the USB stick. Taxi drivers don’t own PCs, but they’ll carry around USB sticks because for 30 rupees — around 60 cents — a USB stick lets them download 100 songs from an Internet café. For 25 cents, they can download any movie you can imagine. A USB stick is how urban Indians carry their lives around.”
Tuli notes that call center operators, who make up the vast bulk of India’s emerging middle class, spend 80 hours a week in front of PCs but rarely have them at home — only 14 percent of urban Indians own PCs. “If you’re earning $200 a month, of which 40 percent goes toward food, you can’t be expected to buy a computer,” he says. “I asked our 40 call-center operators how many had a PC at home, and just three raised their hands. But when I asked how many of them had a USB stick in their pockets, they all raised their hands.”
The other decision was to focus the tablet’s wireless experience not on the current-generation standard, 3G, but on GPRS, which is about 10 times slower. “The cost of 3G in India is prohibitive, and the range and access is very limited,” says Tuli. “So for us, the key question was, ‘How do you get a reasonable full-featured web experience with GPRS?’”
Prior to Datawind, the Tulis had founded several other startups — the most successful of which was WideCom, which developed a wide-format fax system for engineers and architects. (Suneet Tuli even successfully got the Guinness Book of World Records to dub their product the “world’s largest fax machines.”) But WideCom’s core innovation wasn’t its hardware, but its proprietary data compression algorithms, which were capable of sending a three foot by 4 foot engineering drawing over a 9600 baud modem in less than 30 seconds.
Datawind made use of the 17 patents they’d obtained for compression and image rendering to ensure that the Aakash could deliver a 3G experience on a 2.5G connection. “So the experience you get on GPRS with our tablet is as good or better than the one you’d get on 3G in India,” says Tuli. “We built our tablet understanding that the default network it would run on is one of the slowest and most congested in the world.”
The acid test for the Tulis? Whether the commercial version of the Aakash could stream a full-length Bollywood movie on GPRS without stuttering or choking. (The initial build of 30,000 Ubislate 7s — created to government specs — were WiFi only, but all preorders will be fulfilled with the upgraded $57 Aakash Ubislate 7+, which will also feature a much-upgraded processor, a more advanced OS and better battery.)
“That’s the compelling proposition we saw,” says Tuli. “For the Indian consumer, it’s all about communication, connection and multimedia consumption.”
Of course, the Aakash isn’t the first attempt to crack the low-cost computing space. Back in 2006, MIT’s Nicholas Negroponte famously announced the launch of the One Laptop Per Child initiative, a nonprofit venture to create a $100 laptop for children in the developing world. OLPC’s lime-green XO-1 was released in 2008, to a raucous mix of acclaim and criticism. Though 1.9 million XO-1s have been shipped to date, the project is now widely considered a disappointment.
“OLPC was never able to even get close to $100 — they priced the laptop at $180, which is a huge problem; it made the initiative dependent on governments and charities,” says Tuli. “We came out of the gate saying, ‘We want to make a device that consumers want to buy’ — totally independent of government policies. The Indian government is subsidizing tablets for college students, but I think we’ve proven that the consumer is not waiting around for subsidies.
Tuli also notes an anecdote about OLPC deployment in Cambodia, where the laptop’s reliance on a Wi-Fi mesh network meant that most remote villages effectively had no means of connectivity. “When they checked on those villages a month later, they found that elders were getting kids to hand-crank the batteries so that the laptops could be used as a light source. That was the killer app for the OLPC: Light.”
Negroponte has announced that the third generation of the OLPC, a sub-$100 tablet called the XO-3, will be demonstrated at CES — but the reality is that the shockingly successful launch of the sub-$50 Aakash makes future prospects for the XO uncertain.
“In Thailand, Yingluck Shinawatra — the country’s first female prime minister — made the promise to give one tablet PC to every Thai child a big part of her campaign,” says Tuli. “At a debate, one of her rivals asked where the money would come from to fulfill that promise. She brought up our project and said, ‘It’s simple — we’re going to buy those.’”
Dozens of other governments have also sent feelers out to Datawind, prompting the company to consider how to aggressively ramp up production on a global scale. “We’re not just talking about developing markets, either,” says Tuli. “We think we can make an impact on the digital divide right here in North America.”
The $50 barrier seems to have been the big milestone, but it’s not the only one. “The fact is, back in 1984, when I bought my first Mac computer, with a black and white screen and 5 megabytes of memory, it cost $5000 — and just the cable to connect it to a printer cost $50,” says Tuli. “If someone asked me back then if I thought a full-color computer with multiple gigs of memory could be sold for the price of a cable, I’d have said ‘No way. Never. That’s ludicrous.’”
The components used to make up the Aakash Ubislate 7 cost around $20. Given the historical trends, their cost should drop by about 50% over the next two years, and half again two years after that. Which means that by 2016, the world could be buzzing about the imminent arrival of the first $10 tablet.
“There are a few barriers that need to be broken, but similar ones have been broken in the past,’ says Tuli, before concluding with a statement that echoes fellow Canuck Justin Bieber: “If there’s one thing we’ve learned in this process, it’s that you should never say never.”

Apple Inc is becoming a favorite of information technology departments, with the popularity of the iPad and Mac computers eroding what businesses are spending on Microsoft Corp machines, according to a new report.
The Cupertino, California-based company will sell $10 billion worth of iPads and $9 billion of Mac computers to enterprise customers this year, a 58 per cent jump, Forrester Research Inc said in its global IT market outlook report.
By contrast, computers and tablets running Microsoft’s Windows software will decline 3 per cent this year.
Apple is the “biggest disruptive force in the computer equipment market,” Forrester said in the report released today.
The company is leading the so-called consumerization of IT, in which people use technology gadgets for both personal and work tasks. By expanding its leadership in consumer electronics to business customers, Apple is bucking a global slowdown in IT spending.
Forrester estimates that global IT purchases will rise 5 per cent to $2.12 trillion in 2012, versus last year’s 10 per cent growth rate, as companies ratchet back spending amid a sluggish global economy.
Apple doesn’t break down how much of its sales are from business customers, though in October it said that 92 per cent of Fortune 500 companies are testing or deploying the iPad. Forrester said that Apple isn’t doing much to drive the sales and that businesses are adopting its devices because of their popularity for personal use.
“The Apple assault on the corporate market has so far taken place without much formal Apple support, and probably with Apple itself understanding its full extent,” Forrester said.
Microsoft software and Intel Corp semiconductors still dominate the corporate market. Businesses are projected to buy $69 billion worth of Windows-Intel PCs and tablets in 2012, and $68 billion in 2013, the report said. Apple’s Mac and iPad sales to businesses will total $28 billion in 2013, according to Forrester.
